If you’ve never heard of Colossus Fantasy before, you may be feeling overwhelmed when you first enter our app.
Where are the odds? How do I select which game to bet on? How could I possibly predict the statlines of 10 different players correctly? If you’ve asked any of these questions when first accessing our app, this quick-start guide will aim to give you the tips and tricks you need to increase your chances of winning our contests!
At Colossus Fantasy, we specialise in a unique and exciting style of wagering known as pools betting. Unlike traditional sports betting, where you place a bet against a bookmaker’s odds, pools betting allows players to compete against other players for a shared prize pool. Unlike daily fantasy contests, where you pick 3 players under a fixed salary cap and earn points based on their whole performance, pools betting fixes a specific player onto a specific metric, rendering other metrics irrelevant.
Each contest we offer features a preset number of player prop selections, often referred to as “legs”. Every contest also comes with a minimum guaranteed prize, ensuring there is always a meaningful payout available to winners. Once the first game in the contest starts, all customer stakes are collected together and, at the end of the contest, the full prize pool is redistributed among the winners.
At Colossus Fantasy, we currently offer two main types of contests:
- Over/Under Contests
- Margin Contests
Both formats revolve around predicting player performance, but they do so in different ways and offer their own strategic opportunities.
Over/Under Contests
Over/Under Contests are built around one of the most familiar betting concepts in sports: predicting whether a player will exceed or fall short of a statistical line.
In each leg of the contest, you will see a specific player prop with a predetermined line for a particular metric. Your task is simply to predict whether the player will finish over or under that line.
For example:
In this scenario, you must decide whether Purdy will pass for more or less than 217.5 yards during the game (i.e. picking between ranges of 0-217 or 218 and greater).
Doubling Up Your Picks
One of the unique elements of Colossus Fantasy Over/Under contests is the option to select both outcomes on a single leg.
If you choose both the over and the under, you effectively guarantee that leg will stay alive in your entry. However, this comes at the cost of doubling your stake for the contest, so it should be used strategically.
Our largest Over/Under contests, the 10-leg contests, typically include legs from two different games.
Because of this structure, a common and effective strategy is to cover more outcomes in the earlier game. Doing this increases your chances of surviving the first set of legs and staying active in the contest.
Why is this Important
If your selections remain alive after the first game finishes, you may have the opportunity to cash out your position before the second game begins. This can allow you to secure guaranteed winnings regardless of what happens next.
By strategically expanding coverage in early legs, you improve your chances of reaching this advantageous position.
Margin Contests
Margin Contests operate similarly to Over/Under contests in that each leg features a specific player and a statistical category.
However, instead of predicting whether a player will finish over or under a single line, you must predict which statistical range (or margin) their final total will fall into.
Depending on the contest, there may be three, four, or seven possible margins.
For example:
Rather than choosing over or under, you must determine which range Jokic’s final assist total will land in.
Strategic Approach
One key factor to keep in mind when playing Margin Contests is that not all ranges carry equal probability.
The minimum and maximum margins often cover a wider statistical range. Because of this broader scope, they are typically more likely to hit than the narrower middle options.
For example:
- A range like 0–8 assists covers many possible outcomes.
- A range like 9–10 assists covers only two specific numbers.
This means the wider margins can sometimes offer a better chance of survival in the contest, as was used to great effect in this real winning ticket below.
Another factor to consider is game context. If you expect a game to be high scoring, players are more likely to land in higher statistical ranges. Conversely, if you anticipate a slower, defensive game, lower margins may be more likely.
By combining these ideas—range probability and game environment—you can make more informed selections and improve your overall strategy.
