The Ides of March Approach: Your Crash Course for Selection Sunday

Now that we are less than two weeks away from an impactful Ides of March and Selection Sunday, it is time to get tournament-ready.

If you are anything like me, you only tangentially followed regular-season college basketball. Now, you need a crash course on everything from Arizona to Yale to fill out a winning bracket. Luckily, a slew of conference championships begins this weekend, offering a prime opportunity to see who earns a “golden ticket” and which teams are peaking at the right time.

The Mid-Major Madness Begins

The play-in games for mid-major conferences started on Monday, March 2nd. Our first final arrives this Saturday with the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC). Tennessee State and Morehead State are currently tied at the top of the standings, with Southeast Missouri State just one game back and UT Martin trailing by two.

From Sunday through Wednesday, the mid-major championship games take center stage:

  • March 8th: Three conferences crown their champions.
  • March 9th: Two more titles are decided.
  • March 10th: Four conferences wrap up, including Gonzaga’s WCC.
  • March 11th: The Patriot League takes the spotlight alone.

The Power Conference Push

After a brief midweek breather, the intensity ramps up. We see 12 conference finals on Saturday, March 14th—highlighted by the ACC, Big 12, and Big East. The action concludes on Sunday with the final five games, led by the Big Ten and SEC, before we “wash it all down” with the Selection Show on Sunday night.

What to Watch For: Stars and Cinderellas

Think of these conference tournaments as a week-long appetizer. You get an early taste of exuberant wins and demoralizing losses. For many schools, winning a conference title is their only hope of making the Big Dance.

This is also a great opportunity to scout future NBA superstars who didn’t attend “Blue Blood” schools. Think of Steph Curry at Davidson or Ja Morant at Murray State—lottery picks who showcased their talent in these exact conference tournaments. Players who rise to the occasion now are the ones you’ll want to track when the “real” tournament begins on March 19th.

Scouting the Upset

To win your bracket challenge, you must find the Cinderella teams. While everyone looks for the classic 12-over-5 seed upset, you need to uncover the lower seeds capable of reaching the Sweet 16. Look for three specific traits:

  1. Elite Team Defense: Teams that can stifle a high-powered offense.
  2. The 3-Point Wave: Teams that can get hot from behind the arc and erase leads quickly.
  3. Interior Length: Tall low-post players who protect the rim and make opponents uncomfortable.
